How does the VentGenie work?
VentGenie is engineered with an Activated Carbon filter media that is specifically activated to adsorb the Hydrogen Sulfide molecule. H2S is the nasty gas that smells like rotten eggs. The process of adsorption traps the molecule in the billions of pits and cracks of the Activated Carbon as sewer affluent is passed through the filter bed. VentGenie will instantly destroy plumbing vent odors. Guaranteed. It's important to note that VentGenie will only solve vent pipe odor issues. Read the troubleshooting tips below in order to pinpoint the source of your odor problem.
I have sewer odors inside my house, will the VentGenie solve my problem?
No. Unless those odors are coming into your home through an open window located near a plumbing vent pipe. VentGenie will only stop odors originating from your rooftop plumbing vent pipes or from your septic tank vent pipes.
How do I fix indoor sewer odors?
There are only a few ways sewer gas can invade your home, try these tips before you call a plumber in this order:
1) Make sure ALL your drain traps are full of water. Drain traps (P traps) are located anywhere you have a water drain. They hold a small amount of water in a kinked part of the pipe that holds back sewer gas. If you don't use the drain on a regular bases that water can evaporate and allow sewer gas to enter your home.
2) The wax ring between the toilet and floor is drying out, cracking and leaking sewer gas. Sniff test this area. Repairing this requires removing the toilet and is probably best left to a professional. Make sure the toilet base is caulked to the flooring material. VentGenie cannot solve these odor problems.
3) You don't have a trap installed at your basement drain. Sewer odors can be drawn into your basement especially if you have leaky return air ducts that create negative pressure in your basement. If you suspect this call a professional, or visit www.trapguard.com for a DIY solution. VentGenie cannot solve these odor problems.
4) There is a puncture in your vent pipe inside the wall from a nail or some other defect. Many times drain pipes inside your walls are placed in return air bays that are under negative pressure when your fan is on. A defect in the pipe could allow sewer gases to get pulled into your HVAC system and spread throughout your home. VentGenie cannot solve these odor problems.
It's important to note that it may be difficult to troubleshoot sewer smells consistently. The pressure difference between your home and the sewer system changes with many different factors including weather and temperature. So sewer gasses will ebb and flow bases upon differences in pressure through the defects mentioned above. So sometimes you'll smell it, sometimes you won't.
Where are odors outside my house coming from?
If your on a municipal sewer system, the odors can originate at the sewer manhole covers. Sniff test these manhole covers, don't confuse them with storm sewer covers. Call the sewer provider if you smell odors at the manhole covers. Remember odors will ebb and flow. If you have a septic system the odor may be originating from your drain field, this should be obvious and you'll need professional help. All other odors will be coming from your plumbing vent pipes on your roof, or directly from the septic tank vent (if you have a vent pipe directly connected to the tank). VentGenie will instantly solve plumbing vent odors. Guaranteed.
How many plumbing vent pipes do I have? What do they look like?
Most homes have between 1 and 4 plumbing vents. Almost all plumbing vent pipes are are PVC or ABS plastic they maybe black or white and in some cases may be painted to match the roof color. In most cases they are on the back and the sides of your house. Chimney and furnace vents are bigger in diameter and are made of metal pipe, these pipes vent combustion gases and have nothing to do with the plumbing vents. Radon vents may terminate through your roof and look like plumbing vents, do not install VentGenie on radon vents. In some very old homes you may have cast iron vent pipes, if so, contact VentGenie for a custom solution.
Do I need a VentGenie for every vent pipe?
Yes. All of your plumbing vent pipes are connected directly to the sewer or septic system as well as tied to each other. The VentGenie will create a very slight restriction within the venting system and force more gas through the unfiltered vents and may make your problem worse. In some cases your Septic system will have a vent pipe somewhere in your yard, this could be a source of odor.
How is the VentGenie RoofTop Unit installed?
The VentGenie simply slips directly onto your existing plumbing vent on your roof. No glue or tools required. If your comfortable using a ladder and walking on your roof, it's a simple DIY project.
How is the VentGenie InLine filter installed?
The VentGenie InLine Filter is installed in the attic space of your home and is completely concealed. The InLine filter requires cutting the vent pipe, but is an easy DIY as long as there is enough space to access the vent pipe in the attic. The Inline filter uses a specialized coupling that eases installation. There are no stiff rubber couplings to struggle with. The InLine filter is the best choice if you have Lead Roof Boots on your vent pipes typically found on houses with concrete tile roofs.
Should I install a RoofTop or InLine VentGenie?
Both systems are equally effective and you could mix and match if you wish. It's simply a matter of preference. The RoofTop Units are the easiest to install. Typically plumbing vent pipes are located on the back and sides of your roof and out of sight. The VentGenie is finished in a "RoofCamo" color that helps blend into many roof colors and textures in order to be less noticeable. Most people will not be bothered by the appearance of the RoofTop filters, others will prefer the hidden benefit of the InLine filter.
What size VentGenie Do I Need?
Residential plumbing vent pipes will be either 1.5, 2, 3 or (rarely) 4 inches. The number printed on the pipe is the inside diameter of the pipe. The outside diameter will be slightly larger.
1.5 inch pipe has an outside diameter of 1.9 inches, order the 1.5 inch filter.
2 inch pipe has an outside diameter of 2.375 inches, order the 2 inch filter.
3 inch pipe has an outside diameter of 3.5 inches, order the 3 inch filter.
4 inch pipe has an outside diameter of 4.5 inches, order the 4 inch filter.
(VentGenie for 4 inch vent pipe is currently only available in the InLine series)
Please note that each vent pipe might be a different size. Don't assume they are all the same size, measure each vent pipe carefully.
How long will the Activated Carbon last?
The VentGenie hold 50% more Activated Carbon than the leading competitor's product so you can expect 50% more life from the VentGenie. The life of the Carbon will depend on the flow rate and the level of H2S contamination. You should expect between 3-7 years before the Activated Carbon needs to be replaced. You can purchase premium replacement Activated Carbon from VentGenieFilters.com.
